Regular physical activity can improve your muscle strength and boost your endurance. Exercise sends oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and helps your cardiovascular system work more efficiently. And when your heart and lung health improve, you have more energy to tackle daily chores. It's vital for staying fit, improving your overall well-being, and lowering your chance of health concerns, especially as you age. The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, 2nd edition [PDF – 13.5 MB], issued by the US Department of Health and Human Services, recommend that children and adolescents ages 6 through 17 years do 60 minutes (1 hour) or more of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily. Healthy movement may include walking, sports, dancing, yoga, running, or other activities you enjoy. Eat a well-balanced, low-fat diet with lots of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Choose a diet that's low in saturated fat and cholesterol.
Exercise is a vital part of a healthy lifestyle and can have many benefits. Mental health: Exercise can improve mood and energy levels, and reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders. It releases endorphins and other brain chemicals that can enhance your sense of well-being. Sleep: Exercise can help you sleep better by reducing stress levels and regulating your circadian rhythm. Confidence: Feeling strong and active can help you feel more confident and sure of yourself. Energy: Regular exercise can improve your cardiovascular health, giving you more energy overall. Memory: Exercise can boost your memory, concentration, and mental sharpness. Muscle strength: Strength training can help tone and strengthen your muscles, which can improve your balance and reduce the risk of falls. Long-term health: Regular exercise can reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, dementia, depression, and many cancers.
