Smelly feet, also known as bromodosis, is usually caused by a combination of sweat, bacteria, and sometimes fungus: Sweat: Feet have more sweat glands per square inch than any other part of the body, and sweat can become trapped in shoes, and socks, creating a warm, wet environment that's ideal for bacteria. Bacteria: Bacteria that live on the bottom of your feet feed on sweat, breaking down oils and dead skin cells and producing an acid that causes odor. Some bacteria, like Staphylococcus and Propionibacterium, produce acids that smell cheesy or vinegary. Here are some home remedies that can help reduce foot odor: Wash your feet twice a day with antibacterial soap and a scrub brush, especially between your toes. Dry your feet thoroughly, especially between your toes. Sprinkle your feet with powder before putting on shoes. Wear breathable shoes. Change your shoes regularly.
