Toes are generally sensitive to touch, pressure, temperature, and pain because they have thousands of nerve endings that connect to sensory receptors in the skin, muscles, and bones. The brain uses more of the sensory cortex to process sensory information from the feet than from the entire torso. Each of your toes has around 5,000 nerve endings. The brain power needed to process all the sensory information from your toes uses more of your sensory cortex than your entire torso. That means your toes are extremely sensitive to touch, pressure, temperature, and pain. A sore toe is often caused by exercising too much or wearing shoes that are too tight. Your symptoms might also give you an idea of what's causing your toe pain.
