General question. Why shut down Google+ for consumers? Given the challenges in creating and maintaining a successful Google+ that meets our consumer users' expectations, we decided to sunset the consumer version of Google+. Google+ (sometimes written as Google Plus, stylized as G+ was a social network that was owned and operated by Google until it ceased operations in 2019. Google+ was intended to be like Facebook, but owned by Google. Google wanted access to all of the data about social relationships that Facebook has, both to enhance its other services like search and to better target ads. Finally, in April 2019, Google announced the official shutdown of Google+ for personal use, citing a lack of users. The move followed a series of bad decisions and events that led to the failure of the social platform. In essence, Google+ entered a crowded market without a strong enough differentiator.
