For most people, an Epsom bath foot soak is safe, but there are a few instances when it is best to talk to a healthcare provider before using salt. For example, people who have very dry skin should avoid overdoing foot soaks because the salt can dry out the skin leaving the feet more prone to cracks. Tannic Acid to Toughen: Marathoners and long-distance walkers may want to toughen foot with 10% tannic acid or a tea soak. Apply the tannic acid to your feet, or soak in strong tea, twice daily for two to three weeks. If you are prone to blisters and intend to do a lot of walking, try rubbing surgical spirit over the skin for a few weeks beforehand to toughen it. Hard skin (callus)Thick hard skin is just that; an area of skin that is thicker than usual and has become hard as a result.
