Spell Casting Skill is the turn-by-turn limit on how much mana your Wizard can channel into an overland spell. It can be considered just as much of a resource as the mana crystals themselves. Note that the value does apply only to overland spellcasting. First-level wizards begin play with a spell focus. While they are not required to use foci, most wizards do. A specialist wizard with a focus crafted from the correct material can cast spells from her chosen school at + 1 caster level. To use a spell focus, a wizard must mentally attune himself. You can only cast spells you've prepared, are cantrips, are class skills, or are part of equipment bonuses. So if the spell is none of those, you'll have to prepare them. This is standard in D&D. Of the spellcasters Wizards use intelligence. Bards, Sorcerers, Paladins, and Warlocks use Charisma. Clerics and Druids use Wisdom.
